Youth Service in the Cedar Valley

The numbers of students we have reached through our Service Learning program continues to grow. As of this date, we have reached 1,091 unique students. The total of youth reached this school is 4,509 youth.

High school and middle school students in the Cedar Valley are expressing a concern about and demonstrating a desire to create projects that address the problems of substance abuse and bullying. Both topics are very important to these youth and reflect what is important nationwide. The students seem to be very aware of crucial issues affecting youth and are expressing a commitment to help.

Most students agree that education about substance abuse is very necessary. The classes have designed projects to convey the message of substance abuse to younger children. For example a class at Hoover Middle School designed a poster for area schools and a public service announcement to be played on Cumulus Media radio stations. Students at Cedar Falls Alternative High School are creating brochures, wrist bands, and a presentation for young children at the Boys and Girls Club. Another class at Cedar Falls Alternative High School will host an informational session with area legislators to discuss the problems with synthetic marijuana products being sold at many stores in the area. Students at Peet Junior High School are also creating education presentations about substance abuse.

The problem of bullying is also a topic very important to youth. A class at West High School is making a video about cyber bullying to show to their peers and to put on YouTube. A class of sixth graders from Bunger Middle School recently hosted an anti-bullying night for the 5th grade students and parents at Poyner Elementary School where they presented information about the bullying and ideas for reporting it.

Students in the Cedar Valley are very responsive to needs in the community. They continue to demonstrate a strong desire to make our world a better place.
